Welcome

World Cinema Amsterdam takes place between August 18 and 27 August. The film festival that screens the best and most beautiful recent films from Latin America, Asia and Africa - films that will make you see, feel and experience how life is elsewhere. And if you want to know something more about the films... you can ask the directors! Many of them will be present during the festival.

WORLD CINEMA AMSTERDAM COMPETITION
The competition programme is the festival's backbone. All nominated films compete for the World Cinema Jury Award which has a substantial amount of money attached. Nine strong films – competitors - are nominated every year within our Official Selection. A remarkable detail: World Cinema Amsterdam pays special attention to the work of young and talented filmmakers, therefore a large part of our competition titles are indeed debut films. The competition programme will be shown in Rialto and De Balie.

FOCUS PROGRAMME
Like it was done in previous editions with the Caribbean (2013 and 2015), Uruguay and Kazakhstan (2014), Brazil (2012) or Mexico (2011), the seventh edition of the festival brings to Amsterdam a selection of films from a specific region or nationality.

In 2016 we will turn the spotlight on Turkish cinema. Up to 10 features and 10 shorts will be presented during our upcoming edition. These are films that show the developments not only in cinema, but also in the cultural, social and political aspects of this remarkable country. The emphasis will be on the latest advancements in independent cinema, paying special attention to various award-winning debut films made by young film talents.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS
There are still a lot of films that fall out of the categories above, but that the festival wants to offer to its audience. And that we do through our Special Screenings, a section that consists of World Cinema Premières (with special pre-premières of films that will be released in the Netherlands later this year) and World Cinema Specials.

WORLD CINEMA OPEN AIR
It has always been a successful part of the festival: World Cinema Open Air. And no wonder, for it is of course very nice to see a film outdoors in a warm Summer evening. Especially if it is a brand new film! This year World Cinema Amsterdam will show not one, but four of these in its Open Air programme. Come join us at the various screenings in the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre (August 5, 6, 12 and 13) and the Marie Heinekenplein (August 24 - 27). And if you missed some of the films... no worries! World Cinema Amsterdam in collaboration with On the Roof Film Festival (September 6 - 9) will present four titles of our seventh edition's programme that will also be screened in the open air on the roof of the VU's main building.

EAT, DRINK AND PARTY
A festival is not complete without good food and exciting parties. World Cinema Amsterdam offers thus both. Come grab a bite or have a drink in Rialto or join us at the bar in the Marie Heinekenplein during the open air screenings! And on Saturday August 20 and 27 at Rialto, World Cinema Amsterdam will throw two popping and groovy parties that will go on 'til the wee hours!

We are working hard to prepare another fantastic edition of our festival!
