With his poignant Iranian divorce drama A Separation director Asghar Farhadi (About Elly) zooms in on the class differences in present-day Tehran.
A Separation tells the story of Nader and Simin who are considering leaving the country. But then Nader decides to stay in order to look after his dementing father. Simin files for divorce and moves out. Their 11-year-old daughter stays with Nader, who hires a young woman, Razieh, to look after his demented father. However, Nader doesn't know that Razieh is not only pregnant, but also working without her husband's permission. An unexpected event with far stretching legal consequences turns Nader´s life upside down.
Farhadi portrays the complex social, legal and religious relations of Iranian society. A Separation is the first Iranian film ever to be awarded a Golden Bear (2011 Berlin Film Festival). In addition, the leading actress received the Silver Bear for Best Actress and the leading actor the Silver Bear for Best Actor.
