15Malaysia-2

Compilation of 15 short films made by the cream of the Malaysian 'New Wave'. A number of these were made by directors who visited the Rialto cinema in 2008 for the New Malaysian Cinema festival.

The message of Yasmin Ahmad’s calm Chocolate is that life goes on, even if things are not easy. A message given added poignancy by Ahmad’s death, shortly after completing this film.

Ho Yuhang made Potong Saga, a hilarious short film about a Chinese man trying to open an account with an Islamic bank. Liew Seng Tat’s film is also bursting with humour: Halal is a true slapstick film, which shows the only correct way to slaughter a chicken.

In the short science fiction film Our Future, Tan Chui Mui sketches a future world in which everything is perfect; except for the fact that no one is allowed to speak. In Woo Ming Jin’s Slovak Sling: A Guide to Bribery the director is also visiting Rialto this year – one politician attempts to persuade another to change parties.

Also including work by James Lee, Amir Muhammad, Linus Chung and Desmond Ng, among others.
