Heart-warming, award-winning story of snobbery, class differences and empowerment. Val, a role beautifully played by endearing Regina Casé, has been the live-in housekeeper for a wealthy family in São Paulo. She played a major role in the upbringing of their 17-year-old son Fabinho; she loves him, he adores her. Val also has a daughter of her own, Jessica, whom she was forced to leave behind with her former husband due to circumstances. One day, Jessica calls Val to let her know that she will come and live with her for a while to prepare for her university entrance exams. Val welcomes her daughter with open arms, but is mortified when Jessica refuses to conform to the status quo. Instead of sleeping on a mattress in her mother's tiny room, Jessica for instance insists on moving into the family's huge guest bedroom.

Fabinho as well as his father Carlos are quickly quite impressed by the witty, intelligent girl, while Carlos' status-conscious wife Doña Bárbara is rather appalled by Jessica's – in her eyes – inappropriate behaviour. Val meanwhile is at a loss.

Won many awards, among which the C.I.C.A.E. Award (Berlinale) and Special Jury Prize (Sundance).

Anna Muylaert, director of the film, will be attending the festival and will answer the audience's questions after the screening of his film.
