Refugiado 1

Gripping, poignant family drama by Argentinean director Diego Lerman, whose previous work featured in Rialto's Nuevo Cine Argentino festival in 2006. His most recent film Refugiado was one of the big surprises of Cannes' 2014 Quinzaine des Réalisateurs selection.

Buenos Aires: 8-year-old Matias' mother Laura doesn't come to pick him up after a birthday party. The mother of other kids brings him home to discover Laura lying on the floor – beaten up by her husband. After a short stay in hospital Laura decides to finally leave her husband and take refuge in a battered women's shelter with her son. She is still not safe though, as her violent husband refuses to leave her alone and keeps looking for her. Laura and Matias flee.

Helped by Wojciech Staron's excellent camera work, Lerman convincingly shows the effect these events have on Matias' life, how he is yanked from his familiar surroundings to suddenly find himself in a confusing world constantly threatened by danger.
