LAURA AMELIA GUZMÁN, ISRAEL CÁRDENAS | DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, ARGENTINA, MEXICO | 2014 | 85' | SPANISH, ENGLISH, FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Dolares de arena 1

Fourth collaboration of writing-directing team Laura Amelia Guzman and Israel Cardena, which according to leading US film magazine Variety has resulted in their best film so far. This is partly due to the excellent acting of veteran actress Geraldine Chaplin (Charlie's daughter) and debutante Yanet Mojica. Their acting as well as the subtle screenplay give the film depth and a high degree of authenticity.

The Dominican Republic is a country of vast differences: on the one hand, there is extensive poverty, on the other hand there are lavish luxury coast resorts – a contrast mirrored in the characters of European Anne (Chaplin), an aging woman and member of the Parisian jet set, and Dominican Noeli (Mojica), a handsome 20-year-old who makes a living for herself and her boyfriend Yeremi by "befriending" rich and above all generous foreigners. After such a French tourist has left her, Anne enters the scene. She seems to be just another one of many "benefactors", but this relationship is different. While Anne is genuinely in love with Noeli, she is still well aware that Noeli only stays with her because of her money and the promise of a visa for France. Or is it more?
