Argentine director Lisandro Alonso is no stranger to Rialto: in 2006, during Nuevo Cine Argentino, one of World Cinema Amsterdam's predecessors, his La libertad and Los muertos were introduced to the Dutch audience, films which have not gone by unnoticed and reaped several awards. This is also the case with his latest film, the hallucinatory 'Western' Jauja, which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2014 in the Un certain regard section.
1882, the so-called Conquista del Desierto (Conquest of the Desert) is almost complete. During this bloody campaign, the Argentine army brutally expelled the original inhabitants of Patagonia to make way for European settlers. Among them, Danish captain Gunnar Dinesen, serving as an engineer in the army. In the vast and desolate land the captain and his 15-year-old daughter Ingeborg hope to find Jauja, a mythical domain of abundance and leisure. Things go wrong when Ingeborg runs off with a soldier. Dineson sets off in pursuit.
Jauja is Alonso's first film with a professional cast. He managed to engage Danish star actor Viggo Mortensen for the role of Dinesen. Mortensen is also one of the film's producers and provided the soundtrack.
