Travelling around the World without leaving the city? This Summer we make it possible! World Cinema Amsterdam will celebrate its seventh edition 18 to 27 August in Rialto and De Balie. Prior to the festival we kick-off with our traditional Open Air screenings at the Vondelpark (5, 6 & 12, 13 August).
We are back! This year we are celebrating the seventh edition of World Cinema Amsterdam, the only real world cinema festival in the Netherlands with the best films from Latin America, Asia and Africa. Travel around the World from 18 to 27 and enjoy ten days of special films, world premières, culinary extravaganzas, swinging parties and sparkling Q&A's with the filmmakers.
As in previous editions, the competition programme is the backbone of the festival presenting nine films from three continents. At stake are two big prizes: the Jury Award and the Audience Award.
Special focus on Turkey
In 2016 we will turn the spotlight on Turkish cinema. Up to 10 features and 10 shorts will be presented during our upcoming edition. These are films that show the developments not only in cinema, but also in the cultural, social and political aspects of this remarkable country. The emphasis will be on the latest advancements in independent cinema, paying special attention to various award-winning debut films made by young film talents.
Open Air: we start in the Vondelpark
It has always been a successful part of the festival: World Cinema Open Air. And no wonder, for it is of course very nice to see a film outdoors in a warm Summer evening. Especially if it is a brand new film! This year World Cinema Amsterdam will show not one, but four of these in its Open Air programme. Come join us prior to the festival at the various screenings in the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre (5, 6 & 12, 13 August) and during the festival at the Marie Heinekenplein (24th/27th August) and at the Q-Factory in East Amsterdam. And if you missed some of the films... no worries! World Cinema Amsterdam in collaboration with On the Roof Film Festival will present five titles of our seventh edition's programme that will also be screened in the open air on the roof of the VU's main building.
