Biography
Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, born in Pune in 1976, studied commerce and law. He worked as an assistant director to filmmakers Sumitra Bhave and Sunil Sukthankar on their feature films and documentaries. He specialised in direction at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and did a summer university course at La FEMIS, Paris, in 2000. His FTII diploma film Girni (The Grinding Machine) won the National Award for best short film and best direction in 2005. His short documentary Three of Us premiered at the Berlin Film Festival 2008 and won many international awards. His debut feature film Valu (The Wild Bull) premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2008, to much acclaim.
