JUAN SCHNITMAN | ARGENTINA | 2015 | 95' | SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
It is late night and while Marcelo is fast asleep, Lucia is lying restlessly beside him, staring at the ceiling. This is the opening of El incendio, an intense and excellently acted relationship drama, in which Argentine director Juan Schnitman shows how due to mutual aggression and a staggering lack of communication relations between the two lovers spiral into a crisis within 24 hours.
The following day: Lucia and Marcelo are about to buy their first home. Just when they have left the bank carrying a hundred thousand dollars in cash to pay for their new house (as is customary in Argentina), they get a call that the sale is postponed by 24 hours. They have no choice but to take the huge sum home and keep it there for the time being. A nervous situation that causes quite some unease and fuels simmering tensions between the couple, resulting in a big fight which leaves Lucía with a bruise and Marcelo with a cut. They then go separate ways; Lucia to the restaurant where she works, Marcelo to the school where he teaches. It soon becomes clear though that the tensions and aggression have not been quelled yet.
