Lis Kogan studeerde af in de richting film aan de Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. Haar betrokkenheid bij de Braziliaanse cinema begon in 2000, toen zij in verschillende projecten Braziliaanse films promootte. Van 2007 tot 2010 was zij verantwoordelijk voor de programmering van het Rio de Janeiro Janeiro International Short Film Festival. Samen met andere curators en filmmakers richtte zij in 2009 het festival Semana dos Realizadores op, dat zich exclusief richt op contemporaine Braziliaanse film. Competition program
The 2012 World Cinema Amsterdam competition program features nine truly exceptional films, taking us on a grandiose journey around the world with stops in Uruguay, Senegal, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Jordan, Congo, Turkey and Iran, and presenting work by seasoned filmmakers as well as directorial debuts by young directing talents. This year’s nominees are: Pablo Stoll Ward, Moussa Touré, Edwin, Raúl Fuentes, Daniel Aragão, Yahya Al Abdallah, Kim Nguyen, Umut Da? en Massoud Bakhshi. The selected films, some of which have already received awards at renowned international festivals such as Cannes and Berlin, will have their Dutch or European premieres during the festival.
Wednesday 8 August will see the grand opening of World Cinema Amsterdam’s third edition with the screening of 3 (Tres) , the new film by Uruguayan director Pablo Stoll Ward, who had previous successes with 25 Watts and Whisky. After the screening, Stoll Ward will answer questions from the audience. On Saturday 18 August the competition program is concluded with the closing film A Respectable Family by Massoud Bakhski.
Awards
The competition programme forms the backbone of World Cinema Amsterdam. It includes two awards with a cash prize of € 7,500 each: the Jury Award (for one of the nine nominated films) and the Audience Award (for the film with the highest audience rating). The winner of the Jury Award will be announced on Saturday evening before the screening; the winner of the Audience Award will be made public through the press on Monday 20 August. With these prices World Cinema Amsterdam support the filmmakers in their new project.

Marc Boonen Marc Boonen has been involved in the world film festival Open Doek in Turnhout, Belgium, from the very start. In 2012 the festival celebrates its 20th birthday; in 2013 it will join forces with Cinema Novo in Brugge and continue under a new name, with Marc Boonen as artistic and general director. Marc Boonen is also on several advisory boards, including Kunstendecreet of the Flemish Government and the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF). |

Heddy Honigmann Born in Peru, documentary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann is now one of the best-known filmmakers in the Netherlands. She studied film at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome and then moved to the Netherlands in 1978. Her oeuvre of almost 40 films includes several feature-length fiction films and dozens of documentaries, many of which have received awards at international film festivals. Honigmann, a welcome guest at Rialto, has talked about her films in person to the Rialto audience more than once. |
