De Zuid-Afrikaanse film Necktie Youth is bekroond met de World Cinema Amsterdam Jury Award. De Audience Award ging naar het hartverwarmende drama Que horas ela volta? van Anna Muylaert.
Jury Award
Voorafgaand aan de voorpremière van Gouden Palm-winnaar Dheepan, de slotfilm van het festival, werd de World Cinema Amsterdam Jury Award uitgereikt. De juryleden: Patricia Pisters (professor Film & Media studies), Carlos M. Quintela (filmmaker) en Felix de Rooy (multimedia kunstenaar) kozen voor de Zuid-Afrikaanse film Necktie Youth, een verhaal over het leven van welgestelde jongeren uit de chique Zuid-Afrikaanse wijk Sandton, van de talentvolle Sibs Shongwe-La Mer (24). De film wordt 22 oktober uitgebracht door de nieuwe filmdistributeur Full Color Entertainment. De maker ontvangt een bedrag van €5.000 voor een volgend filmproject. De jury verantwoordde haar keuze als volgt: The film is innovative in terms of its inventive script, the strong graphic quality and composition of its images, the interesting use of sounds and different languages, and its address of global modernity. The director of this film is one of these rare multi-talents with the capacity to conquer the world. Giving us the gripping insights from the black 'born free' generation in South Africa we are certain that with this film 'a star is born.'
Special Mention
De Special Mention ging naar Mustang van Deniz Gamze Ergüven. Uit het juryrapport: "The film can be seen as an allegory for contemporary Turkey but it is in also a manifesto for women all over the world. The jury would like to pay homage to these women (both in front and behind the camera) who broaden our collective consciousness with their experiences and perspectives."
Audience Award
De film stond al sinds de eerste vertoning op de eerste plaats en werd niet meer verslagen. Que horas ela volta? van Anna Muylaert (Brazilië) ging er met de publieksprijs vandoor. De film wordt 10 september uitgebracht door September Film. De regisseuse ontvangt naast de World Cinema Amsterdam Audience Award een bedrag van € 5.000. Ook heeft een van de bezoekers een mooie prijs gewonnen, de gelukkige winnaar ontvangt een reischeque van Shoestring t.w.v. 1000 euro.
